Strong to severe thunderstorms possible for SWLA on Thursday

KPLC's Wade Hampton reports that strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday across Southwest Louisiana. Some storms could produce damaging winds and tornadoes.

The storms may begin as early as late morning and then become more numerous into the early afternoon. The threat of severe weather will come to an end by the evening hours.

The American Red Cross has released its second mobile app of the summer, the Red Cross Hurricane App.  This release comes on the heels of the very successful Red Cross First Aid app, which garnered nearly 600,000 downloads in its first six weeks.  We want everyone prepared for hurricanes or other storms that come our way, especially as we see that tropical storm looming.

Governor Bobby Jindal has proclaimed May 27- June 2 Hurricane Preparedness Week. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) is encouraging every Louisiana citizen to begin preparing for the 2012 Hurricane Season.

“We’ve already seen some tropical activity and hurricane season hasn’t officially started yet. Regardless of predictions on how active hurricane season will be, it only takes one bad storm to disrupt the lives of our citizens. GOHSEP urges everyone to get a game plan and be ready now for any and all hazards,” said GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis.

After severe storms this spring and the start of the Atlantic hurricane season June 1st, the Internal Revenue Service encourages you to safeguard your records before disaster strikes.

“Planning what to do in the event of a disaster is an important part of being prepared,” IRS spokesperson Dee Harris Stepter said. “The IRS encourages people to protect tax and financial documents, both personal and professional.”

Some simple steps can help individuals and businesses protect financial and tax records in the event of severe weather and other disasters.

Louisiana sales tax holiday encourages residents to prepare for hurricane season

Louisiana residents can stock up on flashlights, batteries, generators, and other storm-related items free of the 4 percent state sales tax during the 2012 Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27.  The 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1.

“This is the perfect opportunity to begin the preparations that can help to keep your loved ones and property safe, secure and comfortable during hurricane season,” Secretary of Revenue Cynthia Bridges said.  “I encourage everyone to get ready now.  Don’t wait until there’s a storm bearing down on us or, worse, after one has already struck.”

The sales tax holiday exempts the first $1500 of the purchase price of each of the following eligible items:

State Agencies Respond to Severe Weather

The following is a Press Release looking into what the state is doing to help SWLA due to recent weather:

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness’ (GOHSEP’s) Crisis Action Team (CAT) is monitoring the severe weather moving through Louisiana. GOHSEP support staff is in the field to assist local offices of emergency preparedness and coordinate resources as needed. Other state agencies are also either assisting or on standby as the weather moves through the state. 

Acadia, Beauregard, Claiborne, Jefferson Davis, and Vernon Parishes have declared a State of Emergency.

“We urge everyone to stay off the roads and take precaution as Louisiana gets impacted with more rain and damaging winds. As anticipated, rough weather is impacting the state right now which is all the more reason why people should have a game plan and be ready for any hazard at any time,” said GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis.
