'Freedom Lies Here' exhibit on display through May 9 at JSG

The art installation "Freedom Lies Here" by Hank Holland is on display at the Joseph Sisters Gallery, located at 110 S. Third St. in Leesville, through May 9.

There is a slot in the display casket where gallery visitors can write letters and slip them in. Visitors are engouraged to show their thanks and support to troops and to share their stories and experiences -- either by writing a letter or by slipping a photo into the "casket."

After the art installation leaves the Joseph Sisters Gallery, it will embark on a nationwide, one-year tour.

The Joseph Sisters Gallery will host a Japanese Ink and Watercolor class by artist Jeeyoon Olsen. The class will be held on Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m. and costs $35, which includes supplies, drinks and a snack. Seating is limited.

Hodges Gardens State Park to hold Painting in the Park March 16

Hodges Gardens State Park will host Painting in the Park, a class by Lori Hopkins, on March 16 from 9 a.m. to noon in the park's gift shop. The session's work will feature two rabbits, in honor of the Easter holiday.

The session is limited to 20 people. Participants must bring their own canvas. All other supplies will be available at the class. The only cost for the class is the cost of admission to enter the park.

Camellia walks set at Hodges Gardens State Park

Hodges Gardens State Park in Many will hold camellia walks at 10 a.m. on Feb. 1, Feb. 8 and Feb. 15 at the gardens.

The park features a host of various types of camellias. Early spring is when camellias show off their dazzling array of colors.

Vernon Parish Tourism Commission wins honors for 'Mayfest'

The Vernon Parish Tourism Commission won the Louey Award for Festival of the Year for Mayfest, which has been hosted by the VPTC for over 30 years.

The award was presented at the 2013 Louisiana Tourism Summit in Lake Charles.

Mayfest features Louisiana artists and craftspeople.

It also features music, food, vendors and more.

It is held annually on the first weekend in May.
